Can I install win XP on a different Partition and keep the old OS I am running win 7 now?

Q. I want to install win xp and keep my current OS also. I have tried to install on a different HDD but after
the win xp installation loads the necessary files for installation it will attempt to restart the PC, but the computer wil not boot. I had to use a win 7 restore disk in order to boot up with the original OS.
What am I doing wrong? Can anyone help me?

A. xp needs to be installed first, then win7, due to the xp bootloader (ntldr) not being compatible with win 7

how do I delete a hard disk partition in win xp home edition?
Q. I am trying to delete an infected partition holding winxp pro while logged in on my win xp home partition. I go to disk management and right click the partition and see "delete partition" but I cannot select it, it is grayed out. Thanks in advance.

A. download gparted boot cd, burn it to a cd, then boot with the disk in.

it will allow you to do anything you need to do with the disk.

Costs nothing. Works well on any kind of disk or partition.

Easiest thing would be just to reformat to ntfs, but if you want to delete and re-create you can do that too.

How do I reinstall Windows XP on my hard drive using back CDs?

Q. I want to reformat my hard drive then reinstall Windows XP using back up CDs I made of my system files shortly after purchasing my laptop. How do I do this? Keep in mind my laptop has only one hard drive.

A. If you made that cd from system files of your hard drive then it is useless.you will need a PROPER bootable windows xp cd to reinstall.Download an iso image, try searching for a torrent, burn the iso to a cd,test the cd by booting from it and then do the actual reinstall.

How to reinstall windows XP without harming Redhat Linux?
Q. I have installed Windows XP and Redhat Linux on my computer. My windows XP is corrupt. I am planning to reinstall XP but I dont know how to do it without doing anything. Last time when I formatted the drive where XP was installed, even my redhat linux got deleted. Please give me the complete instructions to reinstall Windows XP without harming Redhat Linux.

A. You reinstall windows xp on the partition that you have set up for it in the first place. Then Use SuperGRUB (http://www.supergrubdisk.org/ ) to load back into Red Hat and reinstall/fix the GRUB.

How do I transfer pics and documents from Windows XP to Windows Home edition on the same computer?
Q. Here is the problem: On the same computer I have a version of Windows XP Pro that won't start up. This is where I have all my documents and photos. I also have a version of Windows Home Edition that will start up ok but it's empty . I would like to either get my xp pro to work again OR transfer all my documents from pictures from xp pro to Home edition.

Anybody know how to do that?

A. so ... from what you said above ... you have two operating systems installed on the same hard disk. Windows XP and Windows Home. okay. that's often referred to as a "dual boot system". dual boot means that when your computer boots up (just how it starts when you turn it on, from being Off and not just asleep) it gives you a choice to boot into WinXP or boot into WinHome. normally when i've configured a dual boot setup its for different operating systems, not variants of the same so i'm thinking you mayve had a little accident with an installation here.

especially hearing as how you cant boot into WinXP anymore ... where all your stuff is ... hmm.

and from within WinHome you cant see the directories (through your File Explorer) of the WinXP installation? i'm guessing youve attempted that already.

the best answer for you might be to take it to a local professional or a geeky nerd you know who's good with computers and ask them for any creative ideas ... or ... take it to a professional at your local computer shop and tell them the same story.

what i would do, in this situation, is a little involved and you might not feel comfortable doing yourself. assuming its a desktop computer and not a laptop -- i'd turn the computer completely off, remove the outer case of the computer and remove the hard drive. then i'd plug that hard drive into another computer running WinXP ... but as the second hard disk. then i'd turn that computer on and you should see your hard disk and its files through the File Explorer program on that computer running WinXP.

then you can copy your documents and pictures, etcetera, over to a thumb drive or burn to a CD or DVD so that they arent lost completely.

then bring your hard disk back to your house, re-install it in your computer, then move the files from your CD, DVD or thumb drive back to your WinHome installation.

a bit involved ... but i'm afraid there may not be an easier answer with your specific situation of having WinHome and WinXP on the same disk, and WinXP wont start.

hope this helped a little.

cheers.

Can a Windows XP computer read data generated by a Windows Vista computer and vise versa?
Q. I have a Windows XP computer and I'm planning to buy a Windows Vista laptop. I'm afraid the two might have incompatibility issues when transferring files and documents between the two.

A. Shouldn't be any problem at all. They both use the same types of files.

To be more precise, windows vista and windows xp does not create or generate the data. The programs that run on those operating systems create the files and data contained in them. So, a word document can be seen on both machines. Pictures created by MS paint use the same file formats.

If you have program that creates its own specific files, and that program is not on the new machine, you could have a problem opening it.

Example: If you have Microsoft Office on the XP machine, and you create a spreadsheet file. You will need to have a program on the vista machine that will also open that spreadsheet file also.

Hope that clears things up.

how to remove the old win xp version after setting up a new one?
Q. I ran win xp setup. Normally there is a screen that would ask me if I wanted to format C drive. This one did not show up, and I ended with two win xp versions, the old bad one and the new one. How to remove the old one?

A. You can't remove the old version, You are going to have to do a clean reinstall. You need to go into the Bios, when the computer restarts or boots up hit ether F2 F8 or delete it depends on the Bios you use it will be one or the other it also sometimes will tell you what to hit so look for it too. Change it to boot from Cd first and have it boot Hard drive in second or third and leave it that way. The reason I say to leave it that way is so if your hard drive is ever corrupt or crashes or something happens to the Bios and you can't or no longer get into windows you can do a clean install of windows. Leaving the hard drive at first bypasses reading the CD and sometimes you can't get into the Bios to change it. Put the win XP CD in the tray and reboot it, it will read off the CD instead of the hard drive and follow the instructions to do a clean install. one of the option is to format the C drive to do the install and that will wipe all data off the C drive for the install. Of course back up all data that you need before you do this as you will lose all data formating the C drive.

How to keep Win Vista and Win Xp both on my Dell inspiron 1545?
Q. I have searched a lot and found drivers for Win Xp. But the problem I'm facing is that I have installed XP professioal (pharaonic XP) but now i don't get a choice to switch between vista and xp; however my vista is inaccessible this time.
What should I do..
Suggestions are positively welcome.

A. This is a tricky one that I just had to do on my netbook (have XP and Windows 7 on it, couldn't get to Windows 7). What you need is a Vista CD for your version of Vista. If you don't have a Vista CD, download and burn one (all you really need is the recovery part, make sure you get the right bit version [if you have 32 bit, you need 32 bit Vista CD, 64 bit needs 64 bit CD]. There are also stripped down versions of the Vista CD called the Vista Recovery CD that is quicker to download and does the same thing.

Put in your CD and boot it. It will ask what language, just click Next and instead of Install Now, click Repair your computer. It will either say it needs to apply settings or it will present you with some options. Pick Startup Recovery if you get the list of options and then go through it. It should locate your hidden Vista partition and enable it. The problem is that it will overwrite XP with Vista. Once you get into Vista (and are locked out of XP) download EasyBCD and use it to add XP to your Vista bootloader and save. Upon restarting your PC you should get a menu that asks whether you want to boot into Vista or XP.

How do i fix corrupted windows xp service pack 3 files after a virus screwed them up?
Q. Several Windows XP SP3 files have been corrupted after a virus attack on my computer and need to be fixed, how do I fix them? The system is prompting me for a location of those files. What do I do from here?

A. The best option is to open your Control Panel, and then uninstall Service Pack 3. Be patient .. it may take up to 10 minutes to be removed, as it's quite a large file. Then, reboot your Computer, and then go to "Microsoft Update", and run a Custom search for updates. Windows XP Service Pack 3 should be the first update offered. Download and install it, and then reboot your Computer. As with any changes to your Computer, always create a System Restore point first, in case something goes wrong. If your Service Pack 3 won't uninstall for any reason, you could Download Service Pack 3 from the "Microsoft Downoad Center", and manually re-install it over the top of the corrupted file. That should fix your problem. Please re-post if you have any problems. Good luck !

How can i remove windows xp from my laptop and reinstall windows Me -the laptops original software?
Q. I have recently bought a used laptop that is old. The person I had bought it from had installed windows xp on it, even though it originally came with windows Me. I want to remove the windows xp because it runs slows on the laptop because it takes up more memory than the windows Me would. Also I want to remove windows xp because it is an illegal copy. So when I tried to run updates on it, windows would not install updates because the windows xp is not genuine.

A. I would suggest a full system restore replacing the Windows XP with the correct version of Windows ME. As explained from other members here, insert the system recovery disks if you have these and follow the instructions. This will completely remove all existing Windows XP profiles and will restore your laptop back to factory state after a full system restore.

It is also very likely that your laptop is not capable of working with Windows XP as a result of insufficient system resources on your laptop which is one reason why your laptop is not preforming at its optimum proficiency.

How do you stop minecraft lag on windows xp computer?
Q. I have a windows xp computer and minecraft lags so much I can't play it.

A. Minecraft might look like a game that needs almost nothing to run it. Buts its a java application and you need at least 4GB of RAM a 2.5GHz dual core Intel Processor or AMD 3.0 Dual core processor to run it but you will still get some lag. A decent graphics card helps too.
Windows XP can only support 3.6GB of RAM and you need Special RAM to get 0.6GB so get vista or 7 and that will make it run better by itself.

How do you install windows xp prof with your cd but use the code on someone elses computer?
Q. Installed windows xp and it wont take the code on the computer I don't have the xp prof code for the cd I'm using as its only for troubleshooting and reinstalling.

A. It doesn't have to be the specific code for that particular CD. The install CD version just needs to match the key.

If the key's Windows XP Pro OEM - general distribution edition (the version most commonly distributed to independent computer shops) you need a Windows XP Pro OEM - general distribution disc.

If the key's for the WinXP Pro Retail boxed edition, you need to have the disc for the Pro full retail box version.

If the key's for the WinXP Pro Retail Upgrade edition, you need to use the disc for the Pro retail upgrade.

If it's a branded WinXP OEM edition (example, from an HP, Compaq or Dell), you'll need to use the restore disc from the company that made the computer and any support files that are needed by it. The general OEM edition won't work.

----
Same goes for all the various Home edition discs and keys, your key needs to match the disc version, but they're not uniquely keyed to specific discs. I'm guessing the problem is that the key on your friend's machine doesn't match your install disc.
